Will Safe Sex Prevent HPV?
HPV & Cervical Screening
In addition to HPV vaccination, following safer-sex practices are a great way to reduce the chance of getting HPV as well as other STIs.
Condoms, used correctly from start to finish with each sexual encounter, will provide some protection from HPV. The HPV virus may be present in areas of skin that are not covered by condoms, so it is possible for HPV to be transmitted even if a condom is used. However, condoms also reduce the risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, HIV and gonorrhoea.
Getting tested for STIs regularly if you have more than one sexual partner, or on change of sexual partner, is also a simple and effective way to look after your sexual health.
